I have just got back from my local Utrecht post office. They tried to charge me over 9 euros to send an 11 gram letter to the UK (signed for). About a month ago, I was only charged around 7 for a large A4 envelope filled with papers.

Not really. DHL is now trying to compete with TNT on the domestic market but the international servcies are still geared towards businesses. Still, you could ask.

Can you get into trouble for putting junk mail into those "business reply" envelopes?
I keep getting these emails that say to do it as it will help you get rid of your junk mail (obviously you don't put anything in it that has your name on it), charge the company money and help the Postal Service make money as well. I just want to know if these companies could try to get me for fraud or whatever. I don't want any trouble, but if the USPS can make some money and I can get rid of junk without having to throw it away or recycle it myself, I'm all for it!Can you get into trouble for putting junk mail into those "business reply" envelopes?
I love that. I send all pre approved spam back in their envelope with a no thanks. Someone is getting paid to open envelopes and the post office needs the business. I usually boxed up a cinder block, taped the reply envelope on top, taped the letters "Y O U A R E G H O U L S" on the reply info and put that in the envelope, then took the whole mess to the post office. Now a friend who sent moose nuggets did get into trouble since it is illegal to send fecal matter by post office.
I am sure they could sue you, because almost anyone can sue almost anyone else about anything, but there is no law that you are violating. More than likely, a lawsuit would be branded frivolous.

An envelope took 30 days to move from PA to Ohio, a package sat in Florida for 7 days, Priority mail didn't get scanned and was delivered to the wrong address! Can another company do worse? Maybe UPS or FedEx can do better! They cut services and close Post Offices, raise rates, yet still can't make a profit!Is it time to let the US Postal System be privatized?

I can tell you horror stories about the treatment I've had of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise sent to me through UPS and FedEx. I've never had a problem with a package through the postal service. I've had letters delayed, both coming and going, but you have to realize that you are not the center of the universe and that there are things like bad weather in places far away from you that dictate how fast certain things move.
FedEx and UPS do NOT want the business of delivering your mail to your house. UPS doesn't even want all of the package business it gets - it farms out a goodly percentage of it to USPS for the actual delivery (because they go to every address every day anyway - raking in the biggest cut of what they charge in the process. They only want the parts of the business that make them money.
Any private mail delivery companies that would pop up, should the USPS 1st class monopoly go away, would serve the major markets that see major volume, but would leave the smaller communities and rural areas with no service, because there's no money to be made. Someone would have to provide service to those people.
Guess who that would be? The taxpayer. Right now, and since 1971, not a dime of taxpayer revenue has funded postal operations.Is it time to let the US Postal System be privatized?
It will stay open till it is only open in capitals of states. Then maybe it will close. Because the government does not close agencies, they only grow. And because of a lax in knowing nothing will close them, there service is pitiful, just like every government agency. Every other Private mail service are many times more efficient, because if they do a bad job they go out of business, so the strive to do good work.

On American movies and tv they always seem to put their mail in their own letter box at their house. Is this true? Does the postman pick up your sent mail for you?

However, the critical difference is that nearly all postmen in the US drive (either for their whole round, or at least they have a vehicle allocated to them that they can stop and park where they like, and have access to throughout their round). This is in sharp contrast to the UK, where most postal deliveries are done by postmen on foot, who get to the start of their rounds in minibuses or on bicycles, and have to make their own way back to the sorting offices.
This means that the US postmen have means of storing outbound mail, keeping it separate from inbound mail to be delivered. Most UK postmen don't, and all mail in their possession at any given time has to be carried on their person. UK postbags are about 16kg in weight at the point the postman picks it up (each round has about 6-10 sacks, and are picked up at lockers / post offices on the route - the postman doesn't return to the sorting office). UK postmen deliver to 450-650 addresses on their rounds, so you can imagine the weight if they had to collect mail as well as deliver it, especially when you add in the weight of parcels that nobody was in to collect or sign for.
