I typically send my books sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard (cut slightly larger than the book) and then wrapped in thick paper (a brown paper bag with no markings works very well). As long as you do not include any correspondence in the package (no notes, no invoice, no sticky notes) you can request to send the book by media mail. This is the cheapest way to send media (books, DVDs, CDs). The post office has the right to inspect your package and will return it without reimbursement if they find correspondence in the package. So, follow the rules and save a bit of money in the process.
